UV index in Singapore: why it's almost always high, and what to do about it

NEA measures Singapore's UV Index at the Changi Meteorological Station and reports it every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm — there's no reading outside that window, since there's no meaningful UV radiation from the sun at night. Because Singapore sits so close to the equator, the sun is nearly overhead for most of the year, so daily UV index averages typically run 6 to 9 — into the "High" to "Very High" range by international standards for much of the day, not just during a brief midday peak.

Why exact numbers vary by location

The reported UVI reflects conditions at the single measurement station; cloud cover and rain reduce it locally, so the actual value elsewhere on the island can differ from the reported figure.
